This book provides a comprehensive summary and analysis of all the nationwide referendums since 1793. Referendums are ubiquitous and are increasingly becoming vehicles for political change – or sometimes vehicles of conservatism. In 2016, for example, the voters in the United Kingdom caused a major upheaval when they voted for leaving the European Union. Later in the same year, a majority of the voters in Colombia rejected a peace plan carefully negotiated by the political elites to end decades of civil war. Were these decisions prudent? Why were these issues submitted to referendums? Why did the majority of voters vote against the governments’ recommendations? Have ‘the people’ grown tired of the old political class? Was this a new tendency? These are some of the questions addressed in this new edition, which will be compulsory reading for anyone interested in or concerned about populism and democracy.

This book contributes an analysis of UK-based non-governmental organisations engaged in transnational lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) activism, within a broader recognition of the complexities that British colonial legacies perpetuate in contemporary international relations. From this analysis, the book suggests that greater engagement with intersectional and decolonial approaches to transnational activism would allow for a more transformative solidarity that challenges the broader impacts of coloniality on LGBT people’s lives globally. Case studies are used to explore UK actors’ participation in the complexities of contemporary transnational LGBT activism, including activist responses to developments in Brunei between 2014 and 2019, and the use of LGBT aid conditionality by Western governments. Activist engagements with legacies of British colonialism are also explored, including a focus on ‘sodomy laws’ and the Commonwealth, as well as the challenges faced by LGBT people seeking asylum in the UK. Matthew Farmer holds a PhD in International Relations from Lancaster University. He is currently working as an Independent Researcher based in Lancaster, UK.

This volume addresses an important aspect of Brexit that has been ever-present in public debates, but has so far not received corresponding attention by academic scholars, namely the role of parliaments and citizens in this process. To address this gap, this book brings together an international group of authors who provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary treatment of this subject. Specifically, the contributors, scholars from the UK and across Europe, provide diverse accounts of the role of regional, national and European parliaments and citizens from the perspectives of Law, Political Science and European Studies. The book is structured in three parts focused on developments, respectively, in the UK, in the parliaments of the EU27, and at the EU level. Beyond providing a comprehensive examination of the scrutiny of Brexit, the book utilises the insights gained from this experience for a study of executive-legislative relations in the European Union more generally, examining the balance, or lack thereof, between governments and parliaments. In this way, the book also speaks to some of the long-lasting, indeed perennial questions about the effects of constitutional provisions and political practice in the context of European democracy. Thomas Christiansen holds a Chair in European Institutional Politics at Maastricht University, the Netherlands and is Co-Director of the Centre for European Research in Maastricht (CERiM). He is Executive Editor (with Simon Duke) of the Journal of European Integration and has published widely on the politics of the European Union. Diane Fromage is Assistant Professor of European Law at Maastricht University, the Netherlands and Research Coordinator at the Centre for European Research in Maastricht (CERiM). Her research mainly focuses on parliaments in the European Union, fiscal councils and the European Central Bank.

Veel burgers zijn boos, en nog meer mensen verliezen hun vertrouwen in de politiek. Dat is niet zonder reden, want de overheid lijkt soms niet meer in staat om belangrijke maatschappelijke uitdagingen aan te pakken. Het hele systeem loopt op zijn tandvlees.Tegelijk is het debat over politiek en bestuur van een bedenkelijk niveau. De analyse raakt niet voorbij het cliché van de zakkenvullende, ruziënde en amateuristische politici. Dit boek wil voorbij het politieke spel kijken: waarom faalt de overheid, en waarom is de burger boos?
